If you’re looking for a healthy, delicious, and vrat-friendly snack this Navratri, try this Sweet Potato Tikki. Soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, these tikkis are made with boiled sweet potatoes, peanuts, and vrat-friendly flours like singhare ka atta or rajgira atta. They are naturally gluten-free and perfect to enjoy with green chutney or coconut chutney.

Ingredients (Makes about 6 Tikkis)

  • Sweet potatoes – 2 medium or 500 grams, boiled, peeled & mashed

  • Chaat masala – 1 teaspoon (Check notes below)

  • Amchur powder (dried mango powder) – 1 teaspoon

  • Cumin powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Red chili powder – 1 teaspoon

  • Fennel seeds powder – 1 ½ teaspoons

  • Black salt (sendha namak) – to taste

  • Peanuts – 2 tablespoons, crushed

  • Coriander leaves – 2-3 tablespoons, finely chopped

  • Green chilies – 1 small, finely chopped

  • Lemon juice – 2 teaspoons

  • Singhare ka atta or rajgira atta – 2-3 tablespoons (or as needed for binding)

  • Oil or ghee – as required for shallow frying

Method

  1. Boil & Mash – Boil or pressure cook the sweet potatoes until soft. Peel and mash them well.

  2. Mix Spices & Ingredients – Add amchur powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, fennel powder, sendha namak, crushed peanuts, chopped coriander leaves, and green chilies to the mashed sweet potatoes.

  3. Add Lemon Juice – Squeeze fresh lemon juice and mix well.

  4. Bind with Flour – Add singhare ka atta or rajgira atta to bind the mixture. Knead gently to form a dough-like consistency.

  5. Shape Tikkis – Divide the mixture into 6 equal portions and shape into flat, round tikkis.

  6. Shallow Fry – Heat oil or ghee in a nonstick pan. Place the tikkis and cook until golden brown on both sides.

  7. Serve Hot – Enjoy hot with green coriander chutney or coconut chutney.

Notes

  • If making for strict fasting, skip regular chaat masala and use vrat-friendly spices only.

  • You can make these tikkis ahead of time and reheat before serving.

  • For extra crunch, roll tikkis lightly in rajgira atta before frying.
