Navratri Special – Low Fat Makhana Kheer

Low fat makhana kheer served in a bowl, garnished with almonds, pistachios, and cardamom – a festive Navratri dessert by Avanti Deshpande.

Servings: 4


🥛 Ingredients:


  • Skimmed milk – 1 litre

  • Makhanas (puffed lotus seeds) – ¼ cup

  • Almonds (chopped) – 2 tsp

  • Pistachios (crushed) – 2 tsp

  • Cardamom powder – ½ tsp

  • Sugar/jaggery – 2 tbsp


👩‍🍳 Method:


  1. In a deep vessel, pour in the milk.

  2. Break the makhanas into smaller pieces, add them to the milk, and let it simmer for about 1 ½ to 2 hours (without covering) until the milk reduces and the seeds soften.

  3. Add sugar/jaggery and stir for a few minutes.

  4. Mix in pistachios, almonds, and cardamom powder. Stir well.

  5. Serve hot or cold, as per your preference.
